Notorious Criminal Apprehended Along Northern Bypass
The Kira Road police have successfully apprehended a well-known criminal who has been instilling fear among residents and travelers along the Northern Bypass, Lower Kazinga in Kiwatule, and Metroplex in Nalya.
The suspect, identified as Gideon Matwa, is a 35-year-old resident of Kazinga Zone, Kiwatule Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala District.
The spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, Patrick Onyango, said witnesses reported that Matwa had robbed one John Iraphasa of his mobile phones near the fish ponds in Kazinga Zone.
However, the victim pursued the suspect until he jumped into a nearby stream and disappeared.
Onyango stated that the police were alerted and responded swiftly, apprehending the suspect with assistance from UPDF soldiers.
Upon his arrest, two smartphones valued at Shs 1,500,000 were recovered from him.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Matwa has a history of burglary and theft in Lower Kazimba.
He said the suspect admitted to operating in the areas of Northern Bypass, Lower Kazinga, and Metroplex in Nalya.
The suspect is currently being held at Kiwatule Police Station while further investigations are conducted and arrangements for court proceedings are made.
“The police are continuing their inquiries into this matter,” he added.
Last year police and the army ramped up security measures along the same route to crackdown on potential offenders.
The gangs along the route target unsuspecting pedestrians and motorists, especially traffic congestion while people are heading back home or going for work very early in the morning around 5:30am.
They always target unsuspecting pedestrians and snatch their bags, phones and other items, while some criminals smash car windows with stones and pavers to rob occupants.
