The death toll from the fuel tanker explosion has risen to 15, according to police reports.
A tragic incident occurred yesterday evening (October 22, 2024) in Kigogwa Town along the Kampala-Bombo road in Kasangati, Wakiso district, resulting in the immediate loss of 11 lives at the scene.
In a statement released today, October 23, 2024, Patrick Onyango, spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan police, confirmed that four additional individuals have succumbed to their injuries.
He further indicated that 24 others sustained serious injuries, with 15 currently receiving intensive care and 9 admitted to the general ward at Kirundu hospital.
Authorities are in the process of identifying the deceased through DNA testing.
“Relatives are urged to come forward to assist in this process. Unfortunately, the driver of the truck involved in the accident remains at large,” he noted.
Onyango noted that an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, utilizing available technologies such as CCTV cameras to piece together what happened.
The bodies of the victims will be released to their families once DNA tests are complete.
