Eleven victims of the tragic fuel truck fire in Kigogwa town were picked by their families at the Mulago Mortuary on October 27, 2024.
During the handover, Dr. Moses Byaruhanga, the Police Director of Health Services, revealed that a total of 24 bodies have been processed, comprising 18 males and 6 females, including those who succumbed at Kigogwa, Kiruddu, and Bombo Hospitals.
He emphasized that the bodies were severely burned and could only be identified through DNA testing.
The incident took place on October 22, 2024, when a fuel tanker overturned and ignited, resulting in the instant deaths of 11 individuals, including 9 adults and 2 minors, who had gathered to collect leaking fuel.
The flames also engulfed those nearby and spread to adjacent homes.
The vehicle, registered as UAM 292Q, was en-route from Kampala to Gulu at the time of the accident.
Tragically, those who rushed to siphon fuel were the most affected.
The fire also destroyed four buildings containing nine shops, leading to significant property losses worth millions of shillings, while the injured were swiftly taken to local health facilities for care.
