Old Kampala police has apprehended a suspect for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
David Tumwine, 40, also known as Busoni, from Mubuteraniro Village in Mubende District, was allegedly found with a sub-machine gun (SMG), 24 live rounds of ammunition, two magazines, three pangas, a one-liter bottle of petrol, and ropes.
According to a statement from Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, Tumwine was apprehended on November 4, 2024, around 9:00 am at the Kisenyi Bus Terminal in Kampala Central Division.
He said during routine security checks, the suspect was stopped for inspection while carrying two bags but attempted to escape, leaving his belongings behind.
“The terminal’s security team promptly pursued and apprehended him. Upon inspecting his bags, the aforementioned items were discovered. The Police were immediately notified, and the suspect is now in custody at Old Kampala Police Station,” he noted.
Initial investigations indicate that he was traveling from Kyotera District and heading to Busia.
Owoyesigyire stated that efforts are underway to determine the origin of the firearm and the suspect’s motives.
He praised the security personnel at Kisenyi Bus Terminal for their vigilance and adherence to procedures, which helped prevent a potential criminal incident.
He emphasized the necessity of maintaining strong security measures to protect public safety.
