The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, in collaboration with the Territorial Police of the WamaIa Region, have embarked on a campaign to sensitize school children on road safety among school going children in Wamala policing region.
This initiative aims to educate children on safe road usage practices.
The directorate’s spokesperson, Michael Kananura said the campaign is timely, given the statistics: in 2024, 1,666 pedestrian fatalities were recorded, with 702 being children under 18 years old.
“School administrators and children are actively participating in this campaign, working together to safeguard young lives on our roads,” he said.
He stressed that as responsible road users, “we have a moral obligation to protect pedestrians, especially children” who are disproportionately vulnerable to road injuries due to: small stature, limited visibility, and impulsive behavior.
He urges motorists, particularly motorcyclists, to: reduce speed near schools and residential areas, remain vigilant for child pedestrians, adhere to speed limits, utilize child restraints in vehicles, and educate children on essential road safety practices.
“Together, we can reduce child road crash fatalities and create a safer future for Uganda’s children,” he added.
