Speaker of Uganda Parliament, Annet Anita Among has applauded Makerere University Business School (MUBS) for promoting multilingualism.
In her remarks ddelivered by Prof. Florence Isabirye Muranga, Director General, Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development/TOOKE brand, during Makerere University Business School (MUBS) 3rd Languages Festival 2025, held today at the University in Nakawa, she encouraged both students and individuals to learn more language so that they can tap in opportunities that comes with knowing many laungues.
In his remarks Prof. Moses Muhwezi, the principal of MUBS, emphasized the significance of multilingualism in facilitating international business, particularly with countries like China.
The festival under the theme “Global Ambassadors with Local Roots, Promoting Related Language Diversity,” has attracted hundreds of participants which include, students, prominent guests, members of Parliament, and academia
The event brought together students, lecturers, and partners showcasing the importance of language diversity in promoting global understanding and business opportunities
The languages festival showcases what our language students are doing. We have had students present poems, sing songs in Arabic, in French, in German, in Chinese. So we would like to show the world that we are a business school, and we also understand that language plays a big role in business, and then part of what our students learn, apart from learning business, is languages.” Said Dr. Ronnet Atukund, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, energy and management science at Makerere University, business school.
Dr. Mutumba Abbey, head of the Department of Business Languages and International Relations at MUBS, revealed plans to establish a language center, focusing on five languages: Chinese, German, Swahili, Arabic, and French.
“A person should atleast know 4-5 languages for easy communication and business” he stated
Daniel Okuru, a masters student at MUBS in tourism and hospitality said that it’s important for students to learn different languages to enable them do business anywhere in the world, noting that many people loose job opportunities due to language barriers.
