Two people have been confirmed dead following a road crash in Namutumba district.
The tragic crash occurred on the night of March 25, 2025, at Mazuba, Maganda Sub County, along the Iganga-Mbale Highway.
According to the Directorate of Traffic and Road Saftey spokesperson, Michael Kananura, two people lost their lives while eight sustained severe injuries.
The crash involved three vehicles including a Tata Lorry (UBQ 901S), a Toyota Hiace (UBJ 358P), and an unknown vehicle.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Hiace was traveling at high speed and attempted to overtake the Tata Lorry. To avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle, the driver of the Toyota Hiace swerved onto the side of the Tata Lorry, causing the lorry’s front driver’s corner to shear off the Hiace’s roof. The Hiace then rolled multiple times, resulting in 2 fatalities and 8 injuries.
The injured victims were rushed to Iganga Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the hospital’s mortuary. Unfortunately, the driver of the Toyota Hiace is currently at large, and investigations are ongoing.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding and unsafe overtaking on our roads.
“We urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution when overtaking and to adhere to speed limits to prevent such incidents,” he noted.
He further stressed that speeding and unsafe overtaking can have devastating consequences.
“Let’s exercise caution, responsibility and adherence to traffic laws to prevent such tragic incidents & ensure road safety for all,” he added.
