The Police Chief has strongly condemned the senseless act of violence, where an irate mob attacked police officers No. 75290 PC Chemonges Suleiman.
The 28-year-old police officer was attached to Bisheshe Police Station in Ibanda District.
According to the Rwizi Policing area spokesperson, Samason Kasasira, Chemonges was tragically killed by a mob while guarding the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus, an inmate who died at Nyabuhikye Government Prison in Ibanda.
It is alleged that the mob, believed to be relatives of the deceased, accused the police of being responsible for Kahangire’s death while in custody.
“Police responded to the scene, recovering an SMG rifle and 16 rounds of ammunition,” Kasasira noted. The deceased’s body was taken to the Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary pending further investigation.
“We want to assure the public that all suspects involved in the horrendous tragedy shall be brought to book,” he added.
