EASTER SUNDAY: Bishop Jacinto Kibuuka of the Evangelical Orthodox Catholic Church has strongly criticized alleged bribery of members of Parliament— referencing recent reports that each legislator received 100 million Ugandan shillings, primarily from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), independents, and a few opposition members.

Speaking during an Easter Sunday service, Kibuuka questioned the reported payments, suggesting that if the passage of the Coffee Amendment Bill 2024 was legitimate, there would be no need for such tokens.

The bishop also urged clergy and Christians to reflect on the resurrection of Jesus Christ before acting.

“The resurrection speaks to my actions,” he said. “From today, I should think about my actions. What do I do that pleases other people? What do I do that is helpful to others? What do I do that pleases God?”

Joel Ssenyonyi, the Nakawa West Legislator and Leader of the Opposition, recently stated that the funds were intended to thank lawmakers for passing the Coffee Amendment Bill 2024 and to influence them ahead of discussions and passage of the UPDF Amendment Bill 2025.

Ssenyonyi contended that politicians are becoming a significant problem for the nation, adding that eventually, laws amended to favor them will be revised to favor citizens.
