Efforts to locate the missing victims of the Bulambuli landslides have recommenced responding to heartfelt pleas from the families of those missing, particularly from the severely impacted areas.
The search began shortly after the disaster last month, resulting in the recovery of 42 bodies to date. Army personnel, along with two excavators, have already been stationed at the site.
Lillian Aber, the Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Relief, and Refugees, expressed concerns about the decreasing chances of finding more victims.
She noted that the bodies trapped under the debris have likely decomposed to a point where identification would be nearly impossible without DNA testing.
She also pointed out that weeks have passed without any new recoveries, and typically, such operations are concluded after a month, followed by prayers for those still unaccounted for.
Despite these obstacles, Aber reassured the public that the government remains dedicated to addressing the community’s needs.
