The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is in mourning following the death of one of its founding members and a respected business mogul, James Musinguzi Garuga, who passed away on the morning of August 6, 2025, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.

Garuga, a prominent figure both in Uganda’s business and political circles, is remembered as a trailblazer in the fight for democratic governance.

A revered entrepreneur and community leader, he was among the architects of Uganda’s opposition politics in the early 2000s, playing a pivotal role in the formation of the FDC.

In a statement released by the party, they recognise his immense contribution to the country’s political landscape.

He highlighted Garuga’s role as Secretary for Economic Affairs under the Reform Agenda, a political pressure group that laid the foundation for the FDC.

“Garuga played a vital role in shaping the foundation of what would later become the FDC, offering both moral and financial support at a time when few dared to do so,” the statement read. “He was a man of rare courage, wisdom, and generosity—an unwavering pillar in our pursuit of democratic change.”

The FDC has described his passing as not only a loss to the party but also to the country at large.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. Uganda has lost a statesman, a patriot, and a visionary,” the statement concluded.

Garuga’s legacy spans decades of business success and civic engagement. His contributions to political reform and community development will be remembered as integral to Uganda’s modern political history. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
