Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of goods in transit valued at shs 470 million.
The suspects include Juma Musisi, also known as Young Mandela or Masape, 28, Keneth Muswabi, 35, Kalule Medi, 42, and Mugabi Martin, 27, all of whom are Ugandan nationals.
According to a statement from Patrick Onyango, the spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan police, a report of stolen goods in transit was filed at Kawempe Police Station on November 29, 2024, leading to an investigation referenced as Kawempe CRB 2643/2024.
The investigation revealed that a truck transporting 21,600 kg of coffee beans, worth shs 470,000,000, was redirected from its intended route from Kasese to an ICD in Nakawa for export during the night of November 29-30, 2024.
“The truck, with registration number UBE 355V, was diverted from Kawempe- Bwaise and the coffee was then offloaded into other trucks, registration number UBE 355V and later were transported to Luzira by motor vehicles Registration number plates UAY 827Qa nd UBG 973L, which took the coffee to a company in Luzira to be sold,” he noted.
The coffee was reportedly rejected later on and picked up by the alleged seller, Juma Musisi, also known as Young Mandela or Masape, using vehicles with registration plates UBD 151S and UAM 076N.
Onyango mentioned that during this incident, five suspects were apprehended and charged with theft of goods in transit. The five also appeared in the Chief Magistrate’s court in Nabweru.
He added that efforts are ongoing to locate and charge the remaining suspects, including Asiimwe Allan, Kato Kiggundu, Joab Mucunguzi, and Saidi Kasule, also known as Bogere, who are still evading capture.
The Uganda Police Force is urging the public to provide any information that could assist in the arrest of these outstanding suspects.
