Four individuals have been apprehended in connection with the tragic death of Albert Tugume Apuuli, the brother of Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, along with another boda boda rider, Barnabas Sabiti.
The incident occurred minutes just before 8:00 PM on November 21, 2024, in the Kiwatule Central zone of Nakawa division, Kampala, when unidentified gunmen targeted Tugume, who was working at a mobile money outlet.
During the altercation, Sabiti reportedly tried to help and was shot fatally. Tugume attempted to flee but was shot dead at the scene.
The attackers, who were on motorcycles, made off with Tugume’s bag containing an undisclosed amount of cash, a mobile phone, and mobile banking equipment.
At a press conference held at the Kampala Central Police Station on December 20, 2024, Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire announced significant progress in the investigation into the murder and robbery. He revealed that a joint task force was established to probe the case, leading to the arrest of four suspects.
The suspects include 27-year-old boda boda rider Jimmy Mutagubya from Sempagala zone, Nakawa; 47-year-old builder Bosco Ssalongo Kayemba from Kawanda, Nabweru sub-county in Wakiso district; 27-year-old Marvin Makanga, an unemployed resident of Kagoma, Maganjo in Wakiso; and 30-year-old businessman Hamza Ssuuna Mutebi from Mpererwe, Kampala.
Owoyesigyire confirmed that the four have been charged with murder, aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
He also mentioned that three additional suspects identified as Hussein Kabuye, Joseph Bambaiha (alias Fire), and Martin Lukenge are still at large.
