Over the past three years, the Ministry of Works and Transport has successfully amassed a remarkable UG shs119.8 billion.
Eng. Stephen Kitonsa, the Acting Chief Engineer at the Ministry, highlights that the tolling system was implemented to ensure sustainable funding for road maintenance and to facilitate loan repayments, resulting in this impressive collection of funds.
“As we enter the new year 2025, it’s now three years since tolling and maintenance operations began on the Kampala – Entebbe Expressway, managed by Egis Road Operations,” he noted.
He noted that since its launch in 2022, the Expressway has revolutionized travel for countless Ugandans, offering smoother, safer, and more convenient journeys while playing a crucial role in the nation’s infrastructure growth.
Kitonsa highlighted that in the past three years, 120,000 motorists have benefited from the Toll-Free emergency line (0800270170), reinforcing safety and dependability for every road user.
“These are motorists who stop along the expressway for assistance during breakdowns, accidents and other vehicle interruptions. Our response teams always intervene within 10 minutes after reporting the incidents,” he added.
One of the most remarkable achievements of the Expressway is the substantial decrease in road accidents.
Kitonsa emphasized that this success is largely due to effective public education campaigns, the strategic placement of road safety signs and information billboards, and the collaborative efforts of government enforcement agencies.
As a result, the average number of accidents has plummeted from 21 in the first year to just 9 per month.
“It is therefore to safe say that these efforts have made the road safer for road users,” he added.
