Precious Tumuhirwe, a 35-year-old housemaid, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison by the Kira Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to charges of torturing a 4-year-old child.
The sentencing follows a harrowing case that shocked the nation, drawing widespread condemnation and calls for justice.
Tumuhirwe was accused of brutally torturing Tumukwase, a young girl under her care, in Kikoko Zone, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.
The incident came to light on 27th December 2024, when a disturbing video surfaced on social media. In the footage, Tumuhirwe was seen subjecting the child to cruel treatment in a bathroom, sparking public outrage and a swift police response.
Following the video’s circulation, officers at Kiira Police Station launched immediate investigations. Tumuhirwe fled the area but was apprehended days later in Kabale District after a nationwide manhunt.
Yesterday, 3rd January 2025, Tumuhirwe appeared before Chief Magistrate Shallon Niwaha at Kira Magistrates Court.
She pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated torture, a crime that carries severe penalties under Ugandan law. During the proceedings, the prosecution detailed the extent of the abuse and its devastating impact on the young victim.
