The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) have initiated a collaborative search alongside other security agencies for a soldier accused of fatally shooting dead three civilians and injuring two in Agago District, located in the northern region of the country.
The deceased individuals include 21-year-old Sunday Apiyo, 47-year-old Santino Akidi, and 16-year-old Florence Ajalo. The injured were identified as 47-year-old Charles Kidega Komakech and 20-year-old Janet Apiyo.
The UPDF has publicly denounced the horrific actions of the soldier, identified as Private Bonny Amenoy from the 01 Commando Battalion of the Special Forces Command (SFC).
SFC is the President’s elite unit.
This tragic event occurred on October 20, 2024, around midnight in Ngora East village, Ngora Parish, within Paimol Sub County, Agago North County.
According to a statement from Capt. Edrin Mawanda, the public information officer for the Fifth Infantry Division of the UPDF, initial reports suggest that 45-year-old Pte. Amenoy, who is from Ocini-Kamudini in Oyam District, had a dispute with his wife, Betty Angom, who had fled from him.
It is alleged that in his search for the man he believed was involved with her, and went on a shooting spree.
Mawanda also reported that the injured individuals have been taken to Dr. Amberossoli Memorial Hospital in Kalongo for treatment, while the deceased have been transported to the same facility for postmortem examinations.
“The UPDF leadership in the region regrets and condemns such an incident of misconduct and remains committed to pursuing the soldier who is still at large for prosecution at the scene of crime and justice. Joint investigation by UPDF and sister security agencies are underway,” he noted.
