KAMPALA – Salim Uhuru, the current mayor of Kampala Central Division, has appealed for unity among political rivals as he laid out his vision to improve service delivery in the area.

His remarks came shortly after he was declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer, running unopposed for the 2026 elections.

Speaking to journalists, Uhuru expressed gratitude to his constituents and supporters for their continued confidence in his leadership.

“In the name of Almighty Allah, I sincerely thank the residents of Kampala Central for their trust in me. I remain committed to working tirelessly to uplift our community,” he said.

Uhuru, who transitioned from business into politics, credits his inclusive leadership style for his political success. He said his approach focuses on unity, bringing people together regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, background, education, or social standing.

Commenting on the recent rise of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political pressure group attracting interest from within the NRM, Uhuru acknowledged that some party members may be exploring new political spaces. However, he maintained that “99% of their identity remains rooted in the NRM.”

He encouraged capable leaders within the party to seek elective office in 2026 to better serve their communities.

Uhuru did not shy away from criticizing his former political opponent, Musoke Serunjogi, labeling him a “political opportunist” for allegedly switching parties for strategic advantage. He argued that such inconsistency undermines political integrity, contrasting it with his own long-standing commitment to the NRM.

Looking ahead, Uhuru unveiled several development initiatives, including plans to construct a modern mayoral office as part of his political legacy.

He also announced that he had secured funding from the Japanese government for the construction of a four-classroom block in the division and had acquired an ambulance to support local health services.

Addressing claims that he had bought political loyalty, Uhuru emphasized that his support base stems from collaboration and shared commitment to solving Kampala Central’s pressing issues—among them congestion, poor waste management, high crime rates, pollution, and land disputes.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Uhuru spoke with pride about his humble beginnings in the slums and his rise to a prominent leadership role. He also thanked the public for supporting his side business in food catering, where he has earned a reputation for his popular pilau and local dishes.
