The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is grieving the tragic loss of Pte. Jonathan Olara, who was fatally attacked by unidentified poachers.
In a statement released by the authority’s spokesperson, Bashir Hangi, it was reported that the incident occurred on November 4, 2024, when the ranger, stationed in the Kidepo Valley Conservation Area (KVCA), was shot during a confrontation with armed poachers while on patrol in the Karenga Community Wildlife Area.
“As we mourn this tremendous loss, our thoughts and prayers are with Olara’s family and loved ones. Extend our heartfelt condolences to them during this profoundly difficult time. We are committed to standing by his family and ensuring that they receive the support they need in the wake of this tragedy,” he noted.
UWA has pledged to intensify efforts in combating poaching and other illegal activities that threaten Uganda’s wildlife and ecosystem.
“We stand firm in our resolve to protect our conservation areas and conservation partners in protecting wildlife and the integrity of its habitats for the benefit of all Ugandans,” Hangi noted.
He said UWA is working with other security agencies to pursue the killers
