City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who also serves as counsel to Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, has accused the prisons authorities for allegedly confining Besigye in the solitary.
He also made claims that embattled politician and activist is denied from associating with fellow prisoners.
Lukwago who also serves as the interim leader of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) Katonga Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) faction, told journalists at their offices in Nakasero that they were in fear this would affect the health of their client.
He noted that the move violates Besigye’s pretrial rights.
Lukwago noted that the restrictions imposed on Besigye are intensifying, making it increasingly difficult to access him.
He claimed that the Besigye is confined in a cage-like structure, with limited communication to a telephone, and he has been denied interaction with other inmates despite being in detention.
He said that although he is under detention he `has been denied access to other inmates.
“When he wants something, it is difficult access in other inmates because he is prohibited,” he said.
“Even when one is on remand there is what we call Pre trail rights and one of them is freedom of worship, they have denied him freedom of interaction with inmates of all sects,” he said.
He alleged that Muslims are permitted to attend mosques on Fridays, Adventists on Saturdays, while other Christians gather on Sundays but Besigye remains restricted to take part, which is a violation of pre-trial rights.
“When we visited him on the 23 December it was a nightmare accessing him and giving him the items we had bought,” he added.
