Ugandans are set to gain greater control over their water bills and usage, thanks to the upcoming rollout of smart water meters by MTN Uganda.
These advanced devices will provide households and businesses with real-time data on water consumption, helping them monitor usage, prevent wastage, and ultimately reduce their water bills.
“With smart water meters, Ugandans will finally be able to manage their water bills better because they’ll see exactly where and how their water is being used or wasted,” said Ibrahim Senyonga, General Manager, MTN Uganda Enterprise Business Unit. “This visibility will not only help families save money but also contribute to the larger goal of reducing water waste across our communities.”

For too long, water losses due to leaks, theft, or inefficiencies known as non-revenue water (NRW). These have burdened both utility providers and consumers alike. Smart meters tackle this issue head-on. With real-time monitoring and automated data collection, utilities can swiftly detect leaks or unauthorized usage, leading to faster repairs and significant cost savings. For consumers, the transparency provided by smart meters empowers them to make informed decisions, conserve water, and avoid unexpected high bills.
MTN Uganda’s smart metering initiative is part of a broader mission to drive digital transformation across essential sectors in the country. As a leading strategic digital partner to the Government of Uganda, MTN is at the forefront of delivering innovative solutions that enhance public service delivery, improve efficiency, and foster economic growth.
The recent 22nd African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) International Congress and Exhibition at Speke Resort, Munyonyo, provided the perfect platform to showcase this transformative technology. Bringing together policymakers, experts, and innovators from across Africa, the event focused on sustainable solutions to the continent’s water and sanitation challenges. MTN Uganda was proud to sponsor and participate in this pivotal gathering, reinforcing our commitment to leveraging technology for societal good.
Beyond water management, MTN Uganda sees vast potential for smart metering in other utilities such as electricity and gas. With our extensive digital infrastructure and technological expertise, we are well-positioned to support large-scale deployments, paving the way for smarter, more sustainable communities.
The pilot phase of the smart water meter project will serve as a learning opportunity, shaping future rollouts not only in Uganda but across the region. By collaborating with government agencies, utility providers, and other key stakeholders, we aim to demonstrate the transformative impact of digital solutions in resource management.
Initiatives like the AfWASA Congress underscores MTN Uganda’s dedication to using digital innovation to address Africa’s most pressing challenges.
Water is a fundamental human right, and by investing in smart technologies, we are taking an important step toward sustainable management of this precious resource empowering Ugandans, boosting efficiency, and contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
