The first son and Chief of Defense Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has cleared speculations that he was to replace his father Gen. (Rtd) Yoweri Museveni Tibuhaburwa for the top seat come 2026.
There has been rumors within the public domain that Muhoozi has an ambition to compete for the most top seat in the country through his movement the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
Since last year, the Muhoozi has been holding mobilization campaigns to promote PLU and its agenda which at times many Ugandans claimed was contrary to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s agenda.
His move was welcomed by mostly young people who think they had been sidelined by the historicals, saying it was now there turn to run the affairs of the country.
On other hand this was seen as a contradiction as many political actors and analysts thought Muhoozi was now trying to bring down the old guard in the NRM which is led by President Museveni.
However, this speculations seems to have been put to rest, after the Muhoozi made a surprise announcement that he will not be standing for presidency in the 2026 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He made a surprise announcement through his X account formerly Twitter.
“Almighty God told me to focus on his army first. So I fully endorse President Yoweri Museveni in the next elections,” he wrote.
Muhoozi who is also the Special Presidential Advisor on Specail Operations was appointed CDF this year replacing Gen. Mbadi Mbasu.
