Authorities in Kajjansi have apprehended one Brian Mumbere, known as Natamba, who is believed to the main suspect linked to a series of motor vehicle number plate thefts in and outside Kampala areas.
Following his capture, Patrick Onyango, the spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan area, reported that an intelligence-driven operation took place on January 1, 2025, across locations including Zana, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.
This operation successfully uncovered 16 stolen number plates that the suspect had concealed, presumably to extort money from the victims.
Further investigations indicated that Mumbere had additional stolen number plates hidden in various locations both within and outside the Kajjansi Division.
Onyango announced that a collaborative effort on January 4, 2025, involving officers from both Kajjansi and Nateete Division, led to the recovery of another 15 number plates, which were found in areas such as Kisigula, Katale, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.
“The suspect is believed to have stolen over 30 number plates within a single month. The recovery of these plates is a significant step in addressing the issue of number plate theft, which can have serious consequences, including identity theft and misuse,” he noted.
