Police have apprehended one Geofrey Kato, who is accused of abducting a two-year-old Ayan Makanga on October 10, 2024. Kato allegedly deceived the child’s mother, Fatuma Nayakaisiki, a resident of Kireka-Kamuli in Kira Municipality, into inviting him to her home by claiming he wanted to discuss personal issues.
While Nayakaisiki was busy making tea for him, Kato took the opportunity to escape with the child.
“Later that evening, Kato sent a WhatsApp message to the mother, demanding a ransom of a shs150 million for the safe return of the child,” the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire noted.
The parents informed the Kira Division Police about the situation, which initiated a prompt and comprehensive investigation conducted by a team from the Crime Intelligence Directorate.
The police later managed to apprehend the suspect in Kigarama Village, Kasanda District, resulting in the recovery of the victim. Owoyesigyire reported that the child was discovered in good health and has been reunited with their parents.
The suspect is now in police custody and will be prepared for court proceedings.
“We commend the efforts of the task team for their diligent work in resolving this case, and we also acknowledge the parents for their prompt reporting of the incident, which significantly aided the rescue efforts,” he added.
