The residents of Kigezi have been encouraged to participate in the monetary economy by adopting the government’s poverty alleviation initiatives, aimed at enhancing their livelihoods, increasing household income, and contributing to the development of their region and the nation as a whole.
During the International Community of Banyakigezi (ICOB) Convention held in Kihihi, Kanungu District, President of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa, emphasized that this approach is essential towards combating poverty in the region.
He highlighted that venturing into commercial agricultural ventures not only generates wealth for households but also promotes food security within homes.
The President urged the community to make informed choices regarding enterprises, such as dairy farming, to achieve substantial returns.
He advised those with limited land to practice intensive agriculture, enabling them to conduct small-scale enterprises that yield high profits.
The President also encouraged the adoption of the Parish Development Model (PDM), which is designed to assist Ugandans in overcoming poverty and integrating into the monetary economy.
ICOB was established in response to the pressing need to foster the cultural, social, and economic advancement of the Banyakigezi community both in Uganda and abroad, while also ensuring the transmission of customs, language, and wisdom from ancestors to future generations.
He warned the people of Kigezi against placing excessive emphasis on their tribal identities and origins, as this could hinder the socio-economic progress of Uganda.
Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, the former Prime Minister, praised the president for his relentless efforts in combating poverty and empowering Ugandans to generate wealth through the PDM and various other initiatives.
