The Uganda Society of Architects (USA) has announced its 3rd annual sports gala, scheduled to take place on May 1, 2025, at the International University of East Africa. This year’s event is themed “Fundraising for Perkins Brailler and White Canes,” with the goal of raising funds for visually impaired individuals in Uganda.
The event aims to collect approximately UGX 150 million to purchase 20 Perkins Brailler machines and 50 white canes. According to Arch. Jerome Stolwell Olowo, Vice President of USA, the funds will support individuals with visual impairments, who often face significant challenges in their daily lives.
Olowo emphasized the importance of supporting people with disabilities, citing a recent incident in Mukono where several visually impaired students lost their lives due to lack of access to proper facilities.
The sports gala promises to be an exciting event, bringing together partners, USA team members, and media personalities for a day of fun and fundraising. The event is open to the public, and organizers have assured maximum security, with tents, food, and drinks provided.
TYREXPRESS, one of the sponsors of the gala, has pledged its support for the cause, with Mr. Meerasa Saleem stating that it’s a “humanity cause” that deserves attention.
The Uganda National Association of the Blind (UNAB) has also partnered with USA to support the event. Mr. Mugume Amon, from UNAB, highlighted the alarming number of people with disabilities in Uganda, with 13.6% of the population living with a disability.
The event organizer, Joshua Okino, emphasized the importance of showing support for people with disabilities, stating that “they are also human” and deserve our care and attention.
This year’s event will take place on May 1, 2025 at International University of East Africa starting at 9:00 am
