Members of the refugee disability fraternity have appealed to both the government and private sector to consider them for jobs placements , claiming that they have qualifications and capacity to do these jobs.
The call has been made by the executive director Association of Refugees with Disabilities [ARD] James Muombamungu during the commemoration of the international Day for persons with Disabilities [IDPD] which was held at the Pearl Highway Motel Najjanankumbi Makindye division.
The celebration was under the theme “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” brought together over 100 members of the refugees disability fraternity which is a cornerstone in raising awareness and advocating the rights, inclusion, and empowerment of persons with disabilities.
He said that this day holds special significance as it underscores the organization’s commitment to advocating for refugees with disabilities, a group that faces compounded challenges due to their intersecting identities.
During discussion, participants said that the day serves as a platform to amplify the voices of persons with disabilities and highlight the barriers they face in accessing education, healthcare, employment, and other basic rights however for the refugees with disabilities, these barriers are even more daunting, compounded by displacement, limited resources, and systemic exclusion.
ARD board chairperson Uwingabire Marie Claire, siad that this year’s commemoration is timely as it seeks to emphasize collaborative solutions and shared responsibilities in addressing these challenges. “By marking this day, ARD and its partners reaffirm their dedication to creating a more inclusive society, not only for persons with disabilities but also for all marginalized communities,” she said.
The event also celebrated the diversity within the disability community, showcasing the strengths and achievements of individuals who, despite immense challenges, have shown resilience and innovation in their daily lives.
Partner in attendance were; International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), Disability Rights Fund (DRF), International Rescue Committee (IRC), Refugee-Led Organizations Network (RELON), Humanity & Inclusion (HI), Young African Refugees for Integral Development (YARID), among others.
