In the stillness of the night, while most of Wakiso Town lay in slumber, two men tasked with safeguarding the Diamond Trust Bank in Kkona East had other intentions.
Just hours after donning their uniforms, the two private security guards from G.K.O Security Limited plotted to rob the very establishment they were meant to protect.
According to police reports, Emmanuel Okao, 27, and his accomplice Justine Okello, also 27, concealed themselves in the bank’s ceiling as part of their audacious plan to execute a heist under the cloak of darkness.
They believed they could escape unscathed after the crime.
However, their scheme unraveled quickly.
At approximately 1:30 am on April 27, 2025, authorities received a tip-off regarding the impending robbery.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, stated that officers swiftly arrived at the scene and instructed the suspects to descend.
When they failed to comply, the police resorted to firing tear gas into the ceiling to flush them out.
This is when the situation escalated fatally.
Reports suggest that the two robbers were heard allegedly preparing a firearm, posing a clear threat to law enforcement. The police responded with gunfire.
Onyango confirmed that Okao was shot and killed instantly, while his partner Okello surrendered and was taken into custody.
Okello now faces charges of attempted aggravated robbery, while Emmanuel’s remains were transported to the city morgue for a postmortem examination.
Onyango mentioned that the investigation is still underway.
