Uganda has slipped to second place after suffering a significant defeat to South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Previously leading Group K with 10 points, Uganda now finds itself behind South Africa, which has surged ahead with 11 points following this match.
Uganda’s path to the Morocco AFCON 2025 was obvious, especially after Congo Brazzaville’s loss to South Sudan.
The team was poised to achieve an unbeaten record at home in their last match at Mandela National Stadium.
However, the excitement among Ugandan fans quickly turned to disappointment as Bafana Bafana took control of the game, scoring two goals that sealed their victory.
The first half was marked by missed opportunities from both teams, with attackers struggling to find their rhythm.
The turning point came shortly after halftime when Taddeo Lwanga’s error allowed substitute Thapelo Morena to seize the ball and score in the 49th minute, putting South Africa ahead 1-0.
In stoppage time, South Africa secured their second goal when Iqraam Rayners set up Patrick Maswanganyi, who skillfully controlled the ball and found the net making 2:0 against the Cranes.
This victory not only elevated Bafana Bafana to the top of the standings but also set the stage for their final match against South Sudan at home in Cape Town on November 19, 2025.
