The suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in Kawempe Division, Kampala, has finally been apprehended after over a month in hiding.

The police arrested Tony Ssemanda 28, on September 30, 2024, following a tip off from one of the residents.

It is alleged that on the night of  August 17, 2024, a group of about three men broke into the home of a 34-year-old female victim.

During the attack, the victim was sexually Assaulted , and her property, including cash worth shs200,000, two mobile phones, and a 32-inch television, was stolen.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, during the incident, the victim’s child, who had been asleep in another room, woke up and turned on the lights.

This allowed the victim to identify one of the attackers, Tony Ssemanda, who was a neighbor, while his accomplices were not known to her.  After the crime, Ssemanda fled the area.

“The Police at Kawempe have  arrested one Ssemanda in connection with a robbery and Sexual assault case that occurred in Kawempe Division on the night of August 17, 2024. He is currently detained at Kawempe Police Station pending further interrogation,” he said.

Investigations indicate that Ssemanda has a history of criminal activity and had previously been imprisoned for a similar offense but  was released in June 2024.

“Upon his return to the area, the Police received information leading to his arrest,” he said.

A search of the suspect’s premises yielded a breaking implement and a knife, which have been recovered as part of the ongoing investigation.

Owoyesigyire noted that the Kampala Metropolitan  Police is committed to ensuring justice for the victim.

“We urge the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as we continue our efforts to bring all those involved to justice,” he noted.
