Three people have perished in a fatal road crash at Mile-9 along Mbarara-Bushenyi road in Mbarara.
The incident occurred today November 4, 2024 at approximately 07:35am involving motor vehicles UBK 951Q Toyota Hiace, UAX318V Grand Mark II and UAZ 899J.
According to a statement issued by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, Michael Kananura, the incident occurred when the driver of Mark II traveling from Bushenyi to Mbarara side while at Mile-9 lost control while dodging a pothole, and collided with an oncoming Toyota Wish killing instantly two people including the driver and passenger of a Mark II, and injured seven others all occupants of Toyota Wish.
He also noted that the incident also occurred when a speeding Toyota Hiace traveling from Bushenyi side at a high speed struck and killed one of the victims who was being removed from the crash scene.
“The driver failed to stop and was intercepted at a police checkpoint in Mbarara,” he noted.
Police promptly responded, rushing victims to Mbarara referral hospital and conveyed the bodies to the mortuary for postmortem.
Vehicles were towed to Kashaka police Station for inspection pending further investigations.
The crash was attributed to speeding by all the vehicles involved, and the presence of a pothole in the middle of the road.
Police has urged the relevant authorities in the areas to repair the pothole.
Motorists have also been urged to urged to observe speed limits and exercise caution when approaching accident scenes.
