Ugandans nationwide are joyfully celebrating and applauding the significant achievement of their national team after securing a spot in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, set to take place in Morocco.
The Uganda Cranes have added another impressive milestone to their legacy, marking their eighth appearance in this prestigious tournament.
This is the 35th edition of the Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations.
This milestone was confirmed following South Sudan’s thrilling 3-2 victory over the Congo in Juba on November 15, 2024.
With this achievement, Uganda secures its eighth appearance in the prestigious continental tournament.
Even though the Uganda Cranes still have one more home match to play home, the celebrations for qualifying have already begun in Uganda.
The outcome of the match left Congo in third place in the group with just 4 points, while Uganda has 10 and Eight points, respectively.
Leading Group K with 10 points, Uganda’s upcoming home match against South Africa at Mandela National Stadium on November 15, 2024, is expected to be more of a formality.
However, a victory against South Africa would set a new record, marking the Uganda Cranes as unbeaten at home.
Uganda last appeared in the AFCON tournament in 2019 in Egypt.
The team has previously participated in the tournament in 1962, 1968, 1974, 1976, 1978, and 2017.
Uganda’s finest moment in AFCON history came in 1978 when they finished as runners-up in Ghana.
Uganda joins a host of other qualified teams, including the host nation Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, DR Congo, Egypt, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and South Africa.
Uganda Cranes stands out as the sole team from the CECAFA Zone to secure a spot in AFCON 2025.
