The Uganda Cranes delivered an impressive performance, securing a hard-fought victory against South Sudan at the Mandela National Stadium.
With this win, the Cranes are inching closer to a spot in the AFCON Final tournament, having triumphed 1-0 over South Sudan on October 11, 2024.
Bevis Mugabi netted the crucial goal, helping Uganda earn vital points in the Group K qualification campaign for 2025.
However, automatic qualification is not guaranteed just yet, as Uganda must maintain their form in the upcoming rematch against South Sudan on October 15, 2024, this time as the away team in Juba.
This victory marks Uganda’s second win of the campaign, bringing their total to 7 points after previously defeating Congo 2-0 at home.
The first half of the match saw the Cranes struggling to find their rhythm, failing to register a single shot on target.
But Mugabi capitalized on a rebound , scoring after South Sudan’s goalkeeper, Juma Jenaro Amuk, had saved a header from Denis Omedi.
In the closing moments, South Sudan almost equalized, but Halid Lwaliwa was on hand to clear a shot from Paul Pal Puk Kun off the line.
While results are crucial, the team will need to enhance their performance ahead of the next encounter to raise more points and goals.
Currently, the Uganda Cranes sit second in Group K with 7 points, and a win in Juba would secure their qualification.
