The Uganda Railway Corporation (URC) is celebrating an impressive 123 years since its inception.
In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion between Kampala and Mukono, they have expanded their passenger services to include Mukono Municipality as a reward to Ugandans.
This area is notorious for its heavy traffic, being the sole highway leading to the Kenyan border at Malaba.
Previously, train services only operated between Kampala and Namanve.
With the new extension to Mukono, travellers will have an alternative to commuter taxis, boda bodas, and personal vehicles, helping to ease the congestion on the busy road.
URC has plans to extend these services to other regions of the country within the next three years.
Andrew Muguluma, a board member and chair of the technical committee at URC, shared that the Mukono-Kampala route will offer two morning departures from Mukono and two evening departures from Kampala. He also mentioned that the service will enhance as more coaches and locomotives are added, with fares for this route set at 4,000 Shillings.
