The Uganda cycling team, set to participate in the 3rd annual Jubilee Live Free Race powered by the Grand Nairobi Bike Race, was officially flagged off today 27th friday September, by the Jubilee Insurance.
The race, scheduled for Sunday, 29th September 2024, at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya, will see a record participation from Uganda, with 100 cyclists expected to compete.
Uganda will be represented in all six race categories, including the 60 km main race, 12 km family fun ride, the popular 48 km black mamba ride for single-speed bicycles, 2 km kiddies’ race, the 48 km para-cycling race and 60 km team race for teams of six riders.
The Uganda cycling team is well-prepared and highly motivated to represent the country and deliver an even stronger performance this year. Building on their success in the previous edition, where Paul Lumuria clinched first place in the main race, 2024 Paris Olympian Charles Kagimu secured third, and Jordan Ssekanwagi finished fourth, the team is eager to raise the bar”.
In the Black Mamba category, Dawson Senabulya impressively claimed second place, while Hassan Kiryowa placed fifth in the under-23 category. With these accomplishments fuelling their determination, the team is poised to achieve even better results in this year’s race.
“We’ve had an intense training period in preparation for the race, and we are heading to Nairobi in high spirits, confident that we have what it takes to excel. With substantial prize money on offer for the winners, the competition is sure to be fierce. Beyond the race, we are thrilled to be cycling for a greater purpose, as this event promotes physical activity, financial wellness, and environmental stewardship—issues that are crucial in our society today. It’s an honor to be part of such an impactful initiative that encourages people to embrace healthier, more balanced lives,” said Sam Mahaba Muwonge, President of the Uganda Cycling Association.
This year’s edition comes at a time when Jubilee Insurance has just launched its thematic campaign, “There’s Living and There’s Living Free,” which seeks to empower individuals to live freely by protecting their lives against the unexpected uncertainties that life may bring. Therefore, the company has sponsored 50 cyclists to represent the country in the competition, as the brand continues to champion informed financial decisions and healthier lifestyle choices.
The Jubilee Life Insurance Chief Distribution Officer, Linda Byaruhanga highlighted the growth of Uganda’s participation in the annual event stating “We are thrilled to see 100 cyclists representing Uganda in Kenya this year, a significant increase from the 50 participants last year. This cycling event perfectly aligns with our mission to empower our customers and the wider community by promoting both financial and physical wellness. Looking ahead, we are committed to strengthening our partnership with the cycling community, as we believe that together we can inspire healthier lifestyles and foster a culture of wellness.”
The international premier cycling event will bring together up to 2,500 elite cyclists from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Juba, Cameroon, France, USA, Belgium, Australia, Netherlands, Canada and UK for an intense and adrenaline-fueled competition.
