The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has seized over 500 suspected bags of substandard cement in Kasana Market and Kalongo zone, Luwero Town Council, Luwero District in a significant operation to protect consumers from potentially hazardous building materials.
UNBS is a statutory body established by the UNBS Act cap 210, mandated to enforce standards in protection of public health and safety and the environment against dangerous and substandard products.
Acting on information from the Luwero Police OC station, the UNBS market surveillance team swooped in on a hardware store suspected of producing substandard cement. The UNBS team established that the store’s owner, Mr. Daudi Mutaasa, was in possession of empty bags from reputable cement manufacturers Tororo and Hima, which are suspected for repackaging adulterated cement.
Further searches uncovered sacks of stone dust and lime, substances suspected to be used for adulterating cement. Additionally, a box of counterfeit Digital Comforty Mark (DCM) stickers was found, suggesting an attempt to deceive consumers about the product’s authenticity.
Mr. Mutaasa will face charges in court for his alleged involvement in the production and distribution of substandard cement.
The public is called on to be vigilant and report dealers of suspected substandard products to UNBS through its toll free line 0800133133/233233
