The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is actively engaged in a project to remove structures along the Kampala-Jinja Highway.
This initiative is designed to clear road reserves of any encroachments, ensuring they are available for future developments.
UNRA has stated that in certain areas, this effort will facilitate ongoing rehabilitation work by providing essential space for construction, including drainage systems.
For instance, in the Banda—Kyambogo—Nakawa stretch, car dealers that were removed had occupied the entire road reserve and obstructed drainage channels, which caused flooding during heavy rainfall.
Several stalls, kiosks and shots were pulled down in parts of Banda, Kireka, Bweyogere and Sseta among other places.
The encroachment is mostly in urban centers.
UNRA has announced that the clearance operations will continue next week and will eventually extend to all national roads throughout the country.
