The United States Mission in Uganda has clarified that it is not associated with the recent claims suggesting that their Ambassador has apologized to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. This clarification comes in response to reports circulating on various social media platforms, particularly from an X account named Muhoozi Kainerugaba Quotes @mkainerugabaquo, which alleged that the US Ambassador William W. Popp had formally apologized to the CDF, President Museveni, and the Ugandan populace.
“The United States Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp, has formally issued an apology to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen.@mkainerugaba, H.E. President @KagutaMuseveni, and the people of Uganda for his undiplomatic conduct in the country,” read the post.
The standoff stems from alleged comments made by U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp, which Gen. Muhoozi claimed undermined Uganda’s sovereignty.
In response, Muhoozi, who is also the First Son, took to his X account to voice his dissatisfaction and called for an apology from the ambassador.
This post was later deleted amid backlash from various groups.
Ugandans were then taken aback when rumors began circulating that Popp had already apologized. However, the U.S. Mission to Uganda swiftly countered these claims on their X account, asserting that the narrative was untrue.
“This narrative is completely false. Neither the U.S. Embassy nor #AmbPopp have received any formal request to apologize from the Ugandan government on any matter, nor has he apologized. All official statements are posted on our platforms:-…..,” reads the post.
